Vera Balyura of Verameat

Vera is one of the most dynamic and multifaceted spirits that I have ever met. Several years ago she was the model in a Nylon shoot I styled and I was taken by her own electric personal style and personality. She is one of those rare birds that you meet once in a blue moon who can do all kinds of artistic things successfully-she acts, performs, writes and designs fabulously ludicrous jewelry-the best kind of jewelry, if you ask me. That is Vera with Verameat jewelry in her mouth, above. Oh, and Tilda Swinton wears her jewelry. Not bad.

The name of your jewelry line is Vera Meat. What is the significance of the name?
It’s the only name that made me laugh. I thought of it under the BQE highway, which I thought was a very NYC moment. Many of the best decisions I make are fragments in a meat mirage just beyond the horizon, an absorbing kaleidoscope of marbled steak wonder.

What was the first piece of jewelry that you made? You where actually the first to see my old school, Jules Verne inspired astronaut with a heart chain & space tube. In my mind he’s a strange little pet from another planet that walks around your house & makes puffs of colorful smoke for no reason when you least expect it. Your Rachel keen agog appetent eye helped me get some Nylon magazine attention & VERAMEAT’s been smoothly sailing from there!

Do you plan on expanding the line? I’m acutely addicted to aggrandizing my line! It makes me intoxicated to feel the burn of my smoldering ferment wax carving tools. Making verameat is what I do for fun and now I’m lucky enough to be supported in my art.

You are one of the most multi talented people that I know, dabbling in both jewelry design and acting. What other creative endeavors do you practice? I’d like to write something good one day anomalistic. While making a seamanship away from annoying things like truth uck!

Who wears Verameat? Those who aren’t afraid to wear a deadpan face, Mensa members, globetrotters, those who* after boundless vonka drinks* can sprint like agile deer threw traffic & of course those who don’t look over their shoulder when making a purchase.

Where is it for sale? verameat.com & the stores listed on this site.

What are the inspirations for your line? Oh you know Albino plants, polyvalent animals, & seaweed!

What are you favorite books?
Starting To Pee, If You Where A Vampire, True Abandon-Lick Like A Dog, Peta Friendly Label Covers For Your Cloths-Just Kidding & anything by Oliver Sacks, Proust, Virginia Woolf & David Sedaris. Best gift books are Eat Thy Neighbor: A History of Cannibalism by Daniel Diehl & The Book Of The Damned by Charles Fort.

Who do you think you were in a past life? An Albino Zebra

Favorite sound. When someone is trying to be silent.

Favorite smell. Sonic Youth at McCarren pool, radiating light threw the prism of one’s senses.

Do you believe in ghosts? Only in the minefield of my sister Dasha’s eyes, she’s a dynamite actress, va va boom she’s got em* I’ve only seen the ghost of my old pet violet after I dyed her hamster hair violet and she took off under my bed into violet cloths never to be seen again except for my sleep walking episodes which I’m not 100% sure I really have.

If you could only save one item in your bedroom from a fire, what would you take with you? Hmn. my freeze dried pet bat! They don’t make them like they use to!

Where would you like to travel to for work? Paris or a secret cave on a behemothic mountain with a snow leopard.

Who are your favorite artists? My friends, family, Egon Schiele, you, John Lautner, Isabelle Huppert, Wes Anderson’s gang & anyone young who’s going for it on their own.

Name a recent happy moment. Being my own boss! Meeting Waris & being told about the joy of the sounds of kissing coming out of nowhere as you look up into the sky your eyes open in defiance of the pouring rain!

Name a movie that moved you. Anything Philippe Garrel recently Regular Lovers, Let The Right One In by Tomas Alfredson, Beau Tralvail by Claire Denis, Groundhogs Day cause of Bill Murray, Winter Passing, Hal Hartly anything, Jerassic Park, Science of Sleep & of coarse Herald and Maude among others (wow I LOVE films).

Name a movie that you walked out of. Slumdog Millionaire, bad sound.

What is your favorite store? VERAMEAT.com

What is your favorite beauty product? French Lip Gloss applied by a French man’s lips & anything my Mom gives me.

Which gameshow would you like to be a contestant on? Actually I was thinking of starting my own game show in like 30 years called ‘House Pet’s Of Vera’s Mansion’. There will be a shower, massage, lifting & pool challenge all for the chance to win a candle lit dinner by the beach with non other then myself!

Who would you like to be tied to for 24 hours? The Love Of My Life who I don’t know but hope they have a good singing voice.

What is your favorite cause? Helping old people whenever a need arises on the daily & the GRASP organization.

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans? Yes a grey skinny leg high rise pair of got in Paris just a few months back…

Where do you see yourself in twenty five years? With a Marc Jacobs style company, married to the new Einstein, taking vacations around the world with my own child prodigy army!

What is next for Verameat? Finding more stores for Verameat all over the globe.

"People are talking" ring. I have never seen anything like this.

This is her "Dino Love" ring of a dinosaur eating fried chicken.

Michel Gondry made this drawing of Vera.
